Here is an article I found this morning by CBS New York. It details the growing problem by New York City residents that are dealing with a large population of raccoons. These resident raccoons are even to the point of intimating homeowners and trying to get in their homes. Raccoons pose a growing problem to people living in the city. There is not very much trapping in the city other than pest control companies. When you have that with amble supply of food then you have an increase in population.
The best way to remove a raccoon that is giving you problems is to use a Live Animal Trap. It is much cheaper than hiring a pest control company to remove the animal for you. They can charge up to $200 – $500 to remove the raccoon. Generally you will pay no more than $75 for a trap and all the bait you will need. This is much more cost effective and you can reuse the trap for years to come. Also a raccoon is not very hard to catch. This article states they used cat food and did not catch a single raccoon. If you use the right bait you should have no problem getting him in the trap.
Well after two nights of baiting our Duke Large Raccoon Trap we have caught our Coon. We used our Bandit Bait Raccoon Bait in our trap by taking a stick and dipping it in the bait. We used about 1/2 to 1 oz. of the lure on the stick. We have videoed the release of the coon showing an easy way to open the door without having to get your hand near the door when he runs out. We hope you enjoy the video !

Here is a good instructional video for someone looking to trap a raccoon using a cage trap. This raccoon we caught was living in our attic of our utility house. He was coming down the stairs and eating our cat food. I feel like he must have been doing it for some time since our cat was lying next to the trap when we found him.
We recommend trapping any raccoon that stays around your home and relocating him. Raccoons can carry rabies and be very aggressive toward people and their pets. The trap we used was a Duke Heavy Duty Cage Trap. We baited the trap with our Coon Catcher Lure and placed the lure on a stick of wood behind the trap pan.
After 2 nights we caught our raccoon. We then relocated him to a pasture with a stream. When releasing the raccoon we used the release feature on the Duke Heavy Duty Trap. All you have to do is roll the trap over and the door automatically comes open. This way you do not have to get your hands close to the door and risk being clawed by the animal.
The Duke Dog Proof Coon Trap features a fully enclosed dog proof design with powerful coil springs, a sensitive trigger system and a straight spade staking system. The trap is fired when the raccoon reaches in for your bait, and instead grabs the trigger, firing the trap. When baiting Dog Proof Coon Traps; apply the lure or bait to a cotton ball or sheep’s wool. Place below the trigger so the raccoon has to reach past the trigger to get the bait.
Dont forget to order the Duke Dog Proof Trap Set Tool. It makes setting the trap much easier !
